Three Definitive Indicators That You're Raising a Right-Brained Child

Raising a sensitive, spirited child can be both tiring and incredibly rewarding. If this sounds familiar, your child might be right-brain dominant.

This morning, my daughter has already asked me at least 50 questions about what we have for breakfast and why popsicles or ice cream aren’t on the menu, despite having this discussion just yesterday.

Even though I set out new crayons and a coloring book for her last night, she ignored them and instead started pulling random items from the pantry to “make a concoction, mom!” Before I knew it, condiments were scattered all over the room.

As a straightforward, logical thinker (which is likely why I was called “the mom” in college), I’m often challenged by my right-brained, creative child. She constantly tests my logical mindset, leaving my ego in shambles.

Isn’t it amazing how these kids can see the world so differently because of their right-brain dominance? While it sometimes feels like they’re little agents sent to dismantle our “parenting expertise,” I know, from my background in child therapy, it’s really about their unique way of seeing and interacting with the world.

Have you noticed one of your children leaving a trail of mess everywhere they go? Right-brained kids are often exceptionally creative, which can result in epic messes. They don’t just play with toys like others might; they create complex, imaginative scenarios that leave behind a random assortment of objects.

Ever had your statements challenged by a child? You mention the sky is blue, and they remind you that it’s orange, pink, and yellow during sunset! That might mean you have a right-brained kid on your hands. Despite your best efforts to provide wisdom, these spirited kids prefer to explore the world and learn on their own terms.

Does your home ever feel like a soap opera set? Get ready for an emotional whirlwind! Right-brained kids wear their hearts on their sleeves, experiencing and expressing emotions intensely. If you’re a parent who struggles with emotions, brace yourself—your child is highly intuitive and will sense when you’re overwhelmed, which can add anxiety to the mix.

On tough days, these traits can be frustrating and exhausting. But on good days, I feel incredibly grateful to have such an outside-the-box kid, who pushes me to see life from new perspectives. Despite the challenges, I know these experiences are reshaping my parenting ego for the better.
