Seek a Joyful and Thriving Family? Establish Family Goals {Printable}

Setting family goals is a wonderful way to guide your family with purpose, ensuring that your actions align with your values and priorities.

There is something comforting about organizing thoughts on paper. The neat lines and soothing pastel colors help calm a busy mind and provide hope that even for just a few minutes a day, it’s possible to feel a bit more in control. I keep lists for everything—shopping, tasks, phone calls, and books to read. These lists help keep my goals alive amidst the whirlwind of family life filled with diapers, toys, and laundry.

I’m sure I’m not alone. Many of us set personal goals, whether daily, weekly, or annually. However, most parents I speak with haven’t considered encouraging their children to set personal goals, or even thought about setting goals as a family. Why is there this gap? It might be because parents already have so much on their plates.

But we manage to prioritize so many other things, right? Setting intentional goals for our family is a crucial process that shouldn’t be overlooked, and here’s why. When we pause to consider how our family can grow, we invest in the success of our family. Research shows that without setting goals, we are less likely to take the necessary steps to achieve them. Working towards a shared goal brings families together and increases their chances of success.

It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, moving from one day to the next without pausing to reflect on what truly matters. As parents leading your family, think about the values you want to embody and highlight. What achievements are most important for the coming year?

Understanding the ‘why’ behind our goals makes us more likely to achieve them. Having a clear vision of our family’s mission and goals boosts our internal motivation.

When we set family goals together, it allows everyone’s thoughts and concerns to be expressed—from parent to child. Understanding each family member’s perspective fosters empathy and respect, strengthening family ties and morale as we work as a team.

As we explore what’s important to each family member and discuss our goals and intentions, children develop valuable communication skills that last a lifetime. They also learn about self-discipline, commitment, and perseverance when working towards shared long-term goals.

While there are many aspects of your child’s life that you can’t control—like whom they play with or which teacher they get—goal setting gives both parents and children a sense of empowerment and purpose in their individual and family lives.

Here are five tips for successful family goal setting:

1. **Be S.M.A.R.T.**
Use the SMART framework—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused, and Timely—to keep goals realistic and focused on the process as much as the outcome. Differentiate between short-term and long-term goals.

2. **Everyone Involved**
Set aside time for the entire family to gather and discuss goals, whether during a meeting or over pizza night. Parents can prepare ideas in advance, but every family member should have a chance to contribute thoughts and suggestions.

3. **Keep Goals Visible**
Write down goals and place them where everyone can see them. Younger kids can draw pictures to help process the information and remember the goals.

4. **Value the Journey**
Achieving a goal is great, but don’t overlook the progress made along the way. Celebrate small efforts and view setbacks as opportunities to support each other and foster a growth mindset.

5. **Regular Check-ins**
Regularly reviewing and reflecting on goals increases the likelihood of achieving them. Decide on a schedule for check-ins and stick to it to evaluate what’s working and what needs adjusting.

While it requires effort, setting family goals is a valuable investment. By being intentional about what we aim to achieve individually and as a family, we not only craft a more meaningful life but also create inspiring roadmaps for future success.
